Hearts

I do alot of gardening and hope to be able share my experiences with you on here.

27 February 2010

Made planters out of 1 gallon milk jugs. It's the first time I have ever used them so I will let you know how they work. I figure that there has to be a way that I can grow my plants and keep the enviroment clean at the same time. I am trying the "recycling" garden to see how this works.

Article: Why Start Your Own Seeds?
Security and adventure might be considered opposites in some situations, but the gardener who raises plants from seed can experience both. Security--that confidence in the future that spring's from one's own ability, forethought, and preparation--and adventure--the soaring sense of "anything is possible" and "there are so many interesting things to try"--as well known to those who grow new varieties, experiment with new methods, and dabble in plant breeding and seed saving.

Skill in raising vegetable plant from seed is the very cornerstone of gardening independence. Choice of seeds and careful handling can bring you not only earlier harvests, but better vegetables. You can select varieties of food known to keep or process well so that the winter season, for which gardeners are always planning, will be a time of abundance. Likewise, good eating will be yours all summer long from the selection of fresh vegetables you've planted for their superior quality.

Lost some of my plants to a fungal infection. Not sure of the exact name, but it was mostly the cucurbite family that I lost. Oh well, trial and error! Will just start some more seeds! The weather has been nice the last couple of days but is still too early to plant outside. Can't wait!

We have had some very cool weather and a thunderstorm or two. Lost some plants to hail. Usually this time of year I put out my peas, but I am going to wait a week to see if the weather straightens up.

Going to turn the garden soil this weekend if the weather holds out for me. I am itching to play in the dirt! My indoor plants are ready to go outside, but will wait to put them out after the final frost. The milk jug containers work wonderfully. I will make a page soon on how to make them, but if you want to know before I get it done, just e-mail me and I will send you the instructions.
